Afrika Day, observed annually on May 25th, commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which later evolved into the African Union (AU). This day is celebrated across the continent and by the global Afrikan diaspora to reflect on Afrika’s independence, freedom, and economic liberation from colonial rule.

Afrika Day serves as a reminder of the progress the continent has made, while also highlighting the ongoing efforts toward unity, development, and sustainable growth. It is a day for Afrikans to recommit to their own development and to assert their rightful place in the global community.
Artistic Expression, Creativity, and Afrikan Culture
Afrika Day is deeply rooted in the rich artistic traditions and vibrant cultures that define us. It is a celebration marked by an explosion of color, music, dance, and art, showcasing the diversity and creativity inherent in Afrikan cultures.

These artistic expressions range from traditional dances and music performances that echo the historical narratives of various communities to modern art exhibitions that reflect contemporary Afrikan realities. Therefore, Afrika Day provides a platform for artists and cultural practitioners to celebrate their heritage and influence global art forms. This day also highlights the significant role that art and culture play in promoting dialogue and understanding among Afrika’s diverse populations, serving as both a preservation of heritage and a vehicle for innovation and cultural exchange.
The Karakana’s Virtual Art Experience
We have curated a number of artistic and creative features for you this May, in the journey towards Afrika Day on Saturday 25th. We welcome as many artists, creatives and cultural practitioners to share their arts online under the #KarakanaArtExperience and #AfricaDay2024 themes. We shall share the features and stories from Wednesday 22nd May to Friday 31st May 2024.

What’s in store for you? We have been speaking to artists and creatives who deeply love Afrikan art, design and creative expressions. We will be sharing the vodcasts (video features) on Karakana Online TV on YouTube in the 10 days of the art experience. Snippets of the vodcasts will also be shared on social media and on our website.
How can you be part of this? Share what you create online and tag @KarakanaOnline and @UsanifuNews on all social media platforms. Also use the hashtag #KarakanaArtExperience and #AfricaDay2024. If you are selling stuff, remember to say how much it costs and how people can reach you.

Finally, remember Usanifu News is the #1 platform for news, updates, events and opportunities for Kenya’s creative industry. During the 10 days of the art experience, we will curate other events and activities by other entities that are in line with Afrika Day 2024 for your enjoyment!
