This World Art Day is a timely reminder that art can unite and connect us even in the most difficult of circumstances. Indeed, the power of art to bring people together, to inspire, heal and share, has become increasingly clear during recent conflicts and crises, including COVID-19.–UNESCO

April 15th is a big day for all people who love art. Wasanii wote and those who love usanii! It is called UNESCO World Art Day. UNESCO is part of the United Nations that works to support education, science and culture around the world.

World Art Day was created to celebrate art from every culture and country. The date of April 15th was picked because it is the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci. Many of us know him as a famous artist and inventor from many centuries back. His amazing art and creativity showed how important art can be.

There are many good reasons why we have World Art Day:

  1. It lets us enjoy all the different art styles from cultures around the globe. Art helps people understand each other better.
  2. It encourages everyone to make art themselves! Art lets people express their feelings and imaginations.
  3. It teaches us about art from history and how it has shaped our world today.
  4. It supports artists by letting them share their works of art with many people.
  5. It helps protect artists’ rights and keep artistic traditions alive for the future.
  6. It inspires kids and adults to find the artist inside themselves and be creative.
  7. It shows that art can bring peace by letting people connect through a universal language.
Art nurtures creativity, innovation and cultural diversity for all peoples across the globe and plays an important role in sharing knowledge and encouraging curiosity and dialogue.

As different communities under the umbrella of Kenya’s Creative Industry, on World Art Day, museums, schools and creative communities have special events to celebrate. There are art shows, performances, classes and more! It’s a fun way to explore many kinds of art and creativity.

The power of art to bring people together, to inspire, heal and share, has become increasingly clear during recent conflicts and crises.

So it would be great if everyone got creative and made some art on April 15th every year! Whether drawing, dancing, acting or anything else, use this day to express yourself kama msanii. Art makes the world more beautiful and interesting for everyone.
